27 October 2022

Transport for Ireland (TFI) is happy to reveal the latest figures which confirm the growth and popularity of the TFI Leap Card scheme with the one-billionth journey being recorded.

The milestone comes following a number of recent enhancements to the scheme including:

  • The extension of student discounts of 50% to all those aged between 19 and 23; in addition to students in third-level education.
  • The introduction of the TFI 90-minute fare in the Dublin area, which gives unlimited travel of 90 minutes when using a TFI Leap Card on eligible services.
  • The introduction of a 20% discount on TFI Leap fares.

In September the six millionth TFI Leap Card was sold reinforcing the popularity of the card.

On average 450,000 journeys are taken across the country each day using TFI Leap with the majority of passengers using Dublin Bus, Irish Rail, Luas and Bus Éireann services.

Anne Graham, CEO of the NTA says “this is a significant milestone for the TFI Leap Card Scheme as more passengers throughout Ireland use public transport for their journey to work or leisure activities. The NTA is delighted to witness the continued growth of Leap and we would envisage the scheme continuing to grow into the future”

The TFI Leap Card is a prepaid travel card that is the easiest way to pay your fare on public transport around Ireland.  It is valid on DART, Commuter Rail and Luas services as well as a range of bus services throughout Ireland.
