Online Taxing of Small Public Service Vehicles

1 October 2018

Important Notice

Owners of Taxis, Hackneys and Limousines can now tax online on the Department of Transport Tourism and Sports Online Motor Tax website, www.motortax.ie . The Department has worked closely with the National Transport Authority in developing an electronic interface that will enable all Small Public Service Vehicle (SPSV) licence holders supply the necessary supporting evidence to enable their vehicle(s) be taxed online.

Who can use the Service?

The service is available to all SPSV licence holders who are renewing or taxing a brand new/imported vehicle for the first time (as a Taxi, Hackney or Limousine) in this State. The service is not available online where the tax class has changed after a change of ownership and the vehicle is being taxed by the new owner for the first time i.e. a private vehicle now being taxed by the new owner as a Taxi etc. In that instance, the vehicle must be taxed, similar to now, at your local motor tax office; with all subsequent taxings being available online.

How does the System Operate?

The motor tax renewal reminder notices which vehicle owners receive approximately 2-3 weeks before motor tax is due for renewal, will contain a Personal Identification Number (PIN). In the case of a renewal of motor tax, this PIN will be the last six characters of your Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC). If you are taxing a brand new or imported vehicle for the first time in the State, the PIN is the last six digits of the vehicles chassis number.

To renew motor tax online, the owner must enter the vehicle’s registration number, the PIN and their SPSV licence number. Once this combination is confirmed, the owner is allowed access to the service. To complete a transaction, the vehicle owner will require their insurance details (insurance company name, expiry date and policy number) and their credit/debit card details. Once the payment process is complete the customer is informed that the tax disc will be issued through the post and this is posted directly from the Departments offices in Shannon on the next working day.

When will the Service be available to you?

The online service for SPSV owners is being made available on a phased basis, as follows:
