What is Required to Operate or Drive an SPSV?

There are two separate licences involved in operating an SPSV: the SPSV driver licence and the SPSV vehicle licence. (Note that the SPSV driver licence is in addition to the regular driving licence.)

The holder of a regular SPSV driver licence is licensed to drive any category of SPSV. When operating a taxi, the driver is licensed to stand or ply for hire only in the county or counties for which they have been granted a licence. When operating a local area hackney, the driver must offer services only within the area specified in the vehicle licence. The holder of a local area hackney driver licence is licensed to drive a local area hackney only.

An SPSV driver may drive for hire or reward only in a licensed SPSV. The vehicle licensing processes are described here. Note that a vehicle may be licensed in only one category at any time.

It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the vehicle complies with the relevant regulations.
