The Smarter Travel Cycle Challenge is a fun, free, trip-based team event for people of all cycling abilities that will coincide with National Bike Week 2021 (Sun 12th– Sat 18th Sept 2021). It is open to staff and students from workplaces and third level campuses who are partners of the Smarter Travel Programme. Participants have the chance to win some great prizes while connecting with their colleagues and organisation, being part of a team, and being active!

The Cycle Challenge aims to celebrate cycling as a form of transport and as a pastime, encouraging people to integrate cycling into their lifestyles and see cycling as a viable option on their commute.

You can check if your Workplace or Campus is participating in the list below. Once your organisation has registered to participate in the Cycle Challenge, staff and students can get together to form teams of 2-6 people.

Choose your Team Name and nominate a Team Captain. Each participant needs to have a working email address and have a registered and verified Active Travel Logger account. If you don’t yet have an account on the Active Travel Logger you can register here. Your Team Captain will be the main point of contact for your team and will set up your team on the Active Travel Logger website.

For more information on how to get started, creating a team, logging your cycling journeys and more, refer to our Cycle Challenge Participant Guide and our Frequently Asked Questions by clicking on the header at the top of this page.

The Smarter Travel Cycle Challenge is a fun, free team event. The aim is to clock up as many trips on your bike as you can during the challenge and to encourage your teammates, especially those who haven’t been on a bike for a while, to do the same. There are some fantastic prizes to be won. The Challenge is part of the Smarter Travel Workplaces & Campus programme for large employers and third level campuses promoting more sustainable travel. The Challenge is open to all staff and students from workplaces and campuses that are partners of the programme. For further information email

  • Check on that your organisation is registered.
  • Get a team of 2-6 people together.
  • There is no minimum number of trips new cyclists must make for this challenge, so don’t worry if you’re taking your time building up trips.
  • The main thing is taking part, supporting your colleagues and having fun on your bike!
  • Once your team has a name and a Captain, participants can register for the challenge on the Active Travel Logger.
  • Every participant must register individually and log their trips. Click here for more information »

Distances aren’t logged as we want to make the competition open to as many new, returning and occasional cyclists as possible. If the competition was based solely on distance, club cyclists doing one long cycle at the weekend would leave everyone else in the dust!

By making 1 trip = 1 point, the efforts of someone who hasn’t cycled for years are appreciated as much as someone who cycles many miles every weekend for leisure.

You can see how you and your team are doing when you log into your Active Travel Logger and go to ‘Team Progress’. On this page, you will see your team average figures to date along with information on Calories burned. Your team’s progress will also be shown on the Leaderboards.

Winners of the Cycle Challenge Competitions will be published on

You could use a Dublin bike, a Coke Zero bike in Cork, Limerick or Galway, a company fleet bike or borrow one from a friend to clock up a few trips.

Yes, spot checks are carried out throughout the challenge and the final Leaderboard will be published a few days after the end of the event to allow for a Quality Assurance on the accuracy of the top teams’ entries.

The Cycle Challenge is currently only open to staff and students in organisations that are Smarter Travel Partners.

Using a static bicycle does not count towards cycle trips. The purpose of Cycle Challenge is to encourage participants to cycle on the commute, on shopping trips, and for leisure and pleasure.

The Cycle Challenge is open to people of all cycling abilities whether using a pedal bike, an e-bike, an adapted bike, trike, hand bike, or tandems that offer more support.  All participants need to use a bike during the event.
