The 2025 Smarter Travel Student Awards took place on Thursday, 24th April, at the Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin. This event recognizes the outstanding talent and creativity of students from across Ireland.
260 submissions by 580 students across 17 University & College campuses
Partner Campuses of the TFI Smarter Travel Programme from around the country submitted projects that encourage sustainable and active travel on the commute and beyond. This year’s Awards achieved a record number of entries, with 58 projects shortlisted as finalists from over 260 submissions made by over 580 students across 17 campuses.
The award categories included Engineering & Innovation, Social Marketing and Media. Projects were submitted in the form of a poster and submissions were evaluated by an independent panel of industry experts, with projects ranging from radio advertisements, animations, and videos, to engineering prototypes, mobile applications, and campus-based walking and cycling events.
Showcasing the impressive skills and creativity of students throughout Ireland
John O’Flynn, Head of Customer Experience at the National Transport Authority said: “The Smarter Travel Student awards showcase the impressive skills and creativity of students throughout Ireland. Sustainable travel habits are formed at a young age, so it’s encouraging to see this annual awards event continuing to grow and we’re looking forward to even more entries next year”
Platform to develop their students’ professional portfolio
Academic staff from third level colleges are encouraged to get involved with the Student Awards by incorporating Smarter Travel into their graded coursework. Not only does this give students the opportunity to participate in and experience the benefits of a practical project, but it also provides a platform to develop their CV and professional portfolio.
The awards have also expanded their categories meaning a wider range of students from different academic backgrounds can apply.
