The National Transport Authority (NTA) has marked a major milestone for TFI Anseo in Killarney, announcing that the smart demand-responsive rural transport pilot has now delivered more than 50,000 passenger journeys since it launched on 11 August.
TFI Anseo becoming part of everyday life in Killarney
From trips to work and college to GP appointments, shopping and social visits, TFI Anseo is quickly becoming part of everyday life in the communities it serves. As TFI Anseo Killarney moves into its eighth month of operation, the growing number of journeys reflects how residents are embracing a service built around local needs and everyday schedules.
Book trips in advance by app or phone – demand-responsive public transport
Unlike traditional fixed-route services, TFI Anseo allows passengers to book trips in advance by app or phone, offering a flexible and practical transport option in areas where connections can often be limited. This local, community-first approach has helped people stay connected to essential services and to each other.
50,000 passenger journeys is a significant milestone for the TFI Anseo pilot in Killarney
Edmund Betagh, TFI Local Link Programme Manager at the NTA, said:
“Reaching 50,000 passenger journeys is a significant milestone for the TFI Anseo pilot in Killarney and a strong indication of the role demand‑responsive transport can play in rural Ireland. It shows that when services are designed around local needs and schedules, communities respond by making them part of everyday life. The experience gained through this pilot is providing valuable insight into how flexible public transport can improve connectivity and access across rural areas.”
TFI Local Link Kerry General Manager Alan O’Connell added:
“We see every day how TFI Anseo is supporting people in their local communities, helping them maintain independence and take part in everyday activities. The growing use of the service reflects how important reliable, locally informed transport is to community life.”
Climate Action Fund
Funded by the Government’s Climate Action Fund, TFI Anseo forms part of the National Transport Authority’s Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan, which aims to improve sustainable transport options in rural communities.
Throughout the pilot, passenger feedback and local insights have been central to how the service operates and evolves.
Further developments
As the pilot continues, the NTA will keep working closely with communities, local operators and stakeholders to build on what has been learned and to inform the future development of demand-responsive public transport across Ireland.
