The National Transport Authority (NTA) has today launched a public consultation on the Carlow town bus services. The consultation, which runs until 5pm on Monday, 2 November 2026, is seeking feedback from passengers, residents, businesses and other stakeholders to help inform potential future improvements to the network.
Carlow town bus services
The Carlow town bus service was introduced by the NTA in July 2023 and is operated by Bus Éireann. The network consists of two routes, the CW1 and CW2.
Since its introduction, the network has facilitated over 1.2 million passenger journeys, demonstrating the important role the services play in supporting public transport in Carlow.
Route coverage and connectivity CW1 and CW2
Routes CW1 and CW2 connect key employment, education, retail and transport destinations across Carlow town, with both routes operating every 30 minutes. The routes overlap between Carlow Bus Station and Carlow Fire Station, providing buses every 15 minutes along this section and an opportunity for passengers to interchange between the two routes.
In addition to providing connections within Carlow town, the services facilitate onward travel to key destinations including Kilkenny, Wexford, Waterford, Dublin City and Dublin Airport, while also connecting passengers with the wider Transport for Ireland (TFI) network.
Seeking feedback on future improvements
As part of its ongoing service monitoring and review process, the NTA is now seeking feedback on how the existing town bus services in Carlow are operating and where improvements could be made to better meet the needs of the local community.
Keen to hear people’s views on the current services
John Nott, Head of Service Planning at the NTA, commented:
“The Carlow town bus services have been operating for over three years, and we are now looking at how the network can continue to develop in the years ahead.
We are keen to hear people’s views on the current services and any areas where they feel improvements could be made. The feedback received through this consultation will help inform our next steps for the network.”
