The Minister for Transport and Ministers of State, alongside the National Transport Authority, have announced the inclusion of 105 additional schools in the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programme. This initiative aims to create safer walking, cycling, and wheeling environments for students through measures such as upgraded footpaths, colourful road markings, and enhanced pedestrian crossings.
Since its launch in 2021, the programme has expanded to 526 schools nationwide, with approximately €50 million invested to date. Nearly half of these projects are at advanced stages, including completed works and designs under consultation.
Round 4 introduces tailored safety measures for 12 schools on high-speed rural roads, following successful trials that reduced vehicle speeds. The programme is funded by the Department of Transport via the NTA and coordinated by An Taisce, working closely with communities and local authorities to ensure effective implementation.
