Major Milestone

TFI Smarter Travel LogoThe National Transport Authority (NTA) is celebrating a major milestone as more than 300 organisations have joined the TFI Smarter Travel Programme. This is the highest level of participation since the programme began, and it shows that workplaces and campuses across Ireland are committed to reducing single-occupancy car journeys and lowering carbon emissions, helping to pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.

Workplaces and third-level campuses with 100 or more employees

Funded by the Department of Transport, the TFI Smarter Travel Programme is a national voluntary behavioural change initiative open to workplaces and third-level campuses across Ireland with 100 or more employees.
There is no cost to join, and the Programme provides tailored support to help organisations reduce single-occupancy car journeys, reduce carbon emissions, and improve employee and student wellbeing by providing supports to implement and promote walking, cycling, public transport and carpooling on the commute, for business related travel and beyond.

Partners are assigned a dedicated Smarter Travel Officer to support

Through the TFI Smarter Travel Programme, partners are assigned a dedicated Smarter Travel Officer to help develop and implement Workplace Travel Plans.  Partners also gain access to a comprehensive suite of supports, including tailored employee travel surveys with analysis and action plans, promotional resources and tools, participation in walking and cycling challenges, seasonal campaigns, and networking opportunities. In addition, third-level campuses have the opportunity to take part in the annual Student Awards, where students showcase innovative projects that promote active and sustainable travel.

Celebrating organisations committed to sustainable travel

The programme also recognises and celebrates organisations that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainable travel and its environmental benefits through the Smarter Travel Mark, a three-tier certification awarded to organisations that implement effective measures to support active and sustainable commuting. Any size employer from the private or public sectors can apply for the Smarter Travel Mark.

Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien commented on the announcement saying:

“The TFI Smarter Travel Programme is helping workplaces and campuses to make real changes to how they travel. Every new partner brings us closer to a cleaner, greener, more sustainable Ireland. I encourage more organisations to get involved and be a part of this change.”

Shows the growing commitment to sustainable travel

Anne Shaw, Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport Authority added:

This milestone shows the growing commitment across Ireland to sustainable travel. Every organisation that joins the programme is helping to reduce congestion improve air quality and create healthier communities. We invite more employers and campuses to come on board and be part of this positive change.”
