The National Transport Authority has published its Annual Report and Financial Statements for the year ending 31 December 2024. It was another landmark year for public transport in Ireland with passenger numbers reaching an all-time high for a second consecutive year. In addition, major projects, plans and initiatives commenced and were advanced and completed during the year:

  • In 2024, DART celebrated its 40th anniversary with the arrival of battery-electric carriages under the DART+ programme. Progress included a Railway Order for DART+ Coastal North and planning decisions for DART+ West and South West.
  • The submission of the Luas Finglas Railway Order marked a major step in expanding Dublin’s light rail, while BusConnects Dublin advanced corridor tendering.
  • In Cork, the NTA approved the BusConnects business case and a new depot; Waterford completed consultation on its bus network redesign.
  • Fleet electrification accelerated with 159 battery-electric buses delivered and Bus Éireann’s Limerick fleet electrified. Sixty-five electric train carriages are due on the Dublin–Drogheda line in 2026.
  • The NTA awarded a major contract for the Next Generation Ticketing system, now in its design phase, addressing architecture and logistics. Active travel saw €321 million allocated and 184 km of new/upgraded paths, with 91 Safe Routes to School treatments and parking at 822 schools. By year-end, 85 organisations earned the Smarter Travel Mark.
  • Transport regulation evolved with updated taxi fares, continued grants for electric and accessible vehicles, and a record number of new SPSV driver licences.
