Bus Stop Installation Under Way Ahead of New Services in Kilkenny City

6 September 2019

Work on the installation of bus stop infrastructure for the new city network is under way in Kilkenny.

The works are being undertaken by Kilkenny County Council and funded by the National Transport Authority.

Bus stops at a total of 36 locations are being installed along the Route KK1 and Route KK2, and works include bus shelters at key stops.

Kassel kerbs to facilitate wheelchair access to the low-floor buses are to be installed at all bus stops, and there will be new paving at all locations.

Route KK1 will run from Loughboy Retail Park to the N77 Roundabout, serving Upper Patrick St, MacDonagh Junction and Castlecomer Rd.

Route KK2 will run from Purcellsinch to St Luke’s Hospital, serving Dublin Rd, Newpark Shopping Centre, MacDonagh Station, Nowlan Park and Loreto.

Both routes will join in the city centre to form a ‘trunk’ section, serving Irishtown, Market Yard and John Street Upper.

Services are expected to become operational before the end of the year, and full details of frequencies and schedules will be announced in advance of that.

The operation of the services was put out to tender earlier this year, and the NTA intends to announce the successful bidder when Letters of Intent are signed in the coming weeks.
