Contactless Payments Arrive on TFI Local Link Waterford Services

Contactless payments rollout in Waterford

29 October 2026

Passengers using TFI Local Link services across Waterford can now enjoy the convenience of contactless payments as part of the latest phase of the National Transport Authority’s nationwide rollout programme. Passengers can now tap and pay using debit and credit cards, as well as digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, making travel more convenient and effortless.

Building on national success

Following a successful pilot scheme in Cavan and Monaghan and subsequent rollouts across Louth, Meath, Fingal, Limerick, Clare, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Longford, Westmeath, Roscommon, Tipperary and most recently Wexford, contactless payments have now arrived on TFI Local Link services in Waterford.

The rollout in Waterford builds on the success of contactless payments elsewhere on the TFI Local Link network and marks another key step in the NTA’s efforts to make public transport more convenient and accessible.

Fare options and payment methods

Contactless payment is currently available for single-journey fares. Daily and weekly fare products remain available through the Leap website and the TFI Leap Top-Up App. TFI Leap cards, cash payments and Free Travel Cards continue to be accepted across all eligible TFI Local Link services.

The measure forms part of the NTA’s ongoing programme to modernise public transport fare systems nationwide, with a particular focus on improving accessibility and enhancing the passenger experience in rural and regional communities.
