The National Transport Authority (NTA) has published A Guide to Neighbourhood Traffic Calming and Road Safety Interventions, as a practical resource to support local authorities, engineers, planners and designers in creating safer, healthier and more liveable neighbourhoods.
A Comprehensive framework for action
The guide sets out a comprehensive approach to addressing traffic speed, traffic volumes and road safety issues in residential areas. It provides advice on identifying locations that may benefit from intervention, engaging effectively with local communities, selecting appropriate measures, and monitoring outcomes.
Prioritising sustainable and safe neighbourhoods
Recognising the growing challenges posed by increased vehicle ownership and through-traffic on residential streets, the document promotes a neighbourhood-based approach that prioritises walking, wheeling and cycling while maintaining access for residents, businesses and essential services.
Traffic calming and roadsafety toolkit
The publication includes a toolkit of proven interventions, ranging from traffic reduction measures such as modal filters and school streets, to traffic calming features including raised crossings, junction tightening, carriageway narrowing and lower speed environments. It also highlights the importance of placemaking, green infrastructure, accessibility, and community engagement in delivering successful schemes.
Supporting existing national guidance
The guide is intended to complement existing national guidance, including the Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets (DMURS), the Traffic Management Guidelines and the Cycle Design Manual, providing an additional resource for delivering safer, more inclusive and community-focused streets across Ireland.
