The National Transport Authority (NTA) has announced that TFI Local Link Galway is the latest Local Link service to introduce contactless card payments, giving passengers greater flexibility and convenience when paying for their journeys.
Passengers travelling on TFI Local Link Galway services can now simply tap on using their debit or credit card, or choose mobile payment options such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. This rollout offers customers a quicker, easier, and more convenient alternative to pay for single journeys.
Nearing the halfway point of a national rollout
The introduction of contactless payments in Galway builds on the successful pilot programme in Cavan and Monaghan and follows the rollout across several other TFI Local Link services nationwide. With Galway becoming the seventh of TFI Local Link Offices to introduce contactless payments, the programme is now approaching the halfway point of the national rollout. The continued expansion reflects strong passenger feedback and the NTA’s commitment to delivering modern, user‑friendly payment options for people using rural and regional public transport.
Contactless payments for single‑journey fares
Contactless payment is currently available for single journey fares. Daily and weekly fare products continue to be available via the Leap website and the TFI Leap Top Up App. TFI Leap cards, cash payments and Free Travel Cards remain valid for use across all eligible TFI Local Link services.
The move is part of the NTA’s ongoing programme to modernise public transport fare systems nationwide, with a particular focus on improving accessibility and enhancing the passenger experience in rural and regional communities.
Focus on delivering simple, flexible and accessible payment options
Edmund Betagh, TFI Local Link Programme Manager at the NTA, said:
“The rollout of contactless payments to TFI Local Link Galway marks another important step in modernising fare payment across rural and regional services. With Galway now the seventh of 15 TFI Local Link Offices to introduce this technology, we are approaching the halfway point of the national programme. This progress reflects strong passenger uptake and our continued focus on delivering simple, flexible and accessible payment options that improve the day‑to‑day travel experience for communities across Ireland.”
Joe Greally, General Manager, TFI Local Link Galway, added:
“The introduction of contactless payments is a very positive development for passengers using TFI Local Link Galway services. It makes travelling easier and more convenient, particularly for occasional users and visitors, while complementing existing payment options. This upgrade supports our ongoing work to strengthen local bus services across the county and ensure public transport in Galway continues to be reliable, accessible and focused on the needs of the communities we serve.”
