European Mobility Week takes place from 16 to 22 September 2026. It’s the European Commission’s campaign to promote sustainable urban travel. The 2026 theme is “Mobility for Everyone” which is about making sure all people can access sustainable transport, no matter their income, location, gender or abilities.

Local support for European Mobility Week

The NTA Smarter Travel team has supported local authorities to register for European Mobility Week. Some of the activities planned are outlined below:

  • Waterford City & County Council is delivering its bus travel initiative, City Bus Day Out, on 19 September.
    • Participants can avail of complimentary Leap cards and travel for free on city bus services, with groups of friends and community organisations encouraged to take part.
    • The council is also offering two maritime-themed walking tours led by Tides and Tales, exploring Waterford’s rich connections to its waterways, quays and port history;
    • and bringing culture on board with Music & Poetry in Motion, featuring live music and artistic performances on selected city bus routes across the city.
  • Dublin City Council is marking European Mobility Week with a special event at City Hall on 16 September celebrating 35 years of pedestrianisation in Temple Bar.
    • Attendees will hear a panel discussion on the lessons learned from Temple Bar’s transformation and the future opportunities presented by the proposed College Green Plaza, alongside a photography exhibition, networking reception and remarks from the Lord Mayor.
    • The council is also hosting a range of activities throughout the week, including
      • Dublin Buzz beekeeping workshops,
      • guided History & Culture Walks,
      • a family-friendly programme of street theatre
      • and games on Parliament Street.
  • Fingal County Council is promoting active and sustainable travel throughout European Mobility Week
    • with a range of community initiatives, including
      • a county-wide gathering of its walking groups,
      • the launch of the Swords Cycle to School Scheme,
      • and free eBike trips across Fingal to celebrate the introduction of the new Bleeper Bike eBike service.
    • The council is also trialling School Streets at Mary Queen of Ireland NS and Gaelscoil Oilibhéir, including a street party with games and activities for pupils, and hosting a Sofa to Saddle Greenway Cycle.
  • Cork City Council is encouraging people to explore the city on foot through its
    • Wonderful Women of Cork Walk on 18 September, highlighting places associated with women who have made a significant contribution to Cork’s history while promoting walking as an enjoyable way to travel around the city.
    • The council also celebrated with a major event in Ballincollig with sport, culture, food and community activities in a people-focused, traffic-free environment.

Choose a sustainable journey

European Mobility Week is an opportunity to try a different way to travel.
People can combine public transport with walking or cycling, where this suits their needs. These choices can support healthier, more accessible and lower carbon communities.

The NTA will continue to work with local authorities, transport operators, employers, campuses and communities to broaden sustainable travel choices across Ireland.

About the TFI Smarter Travel Programme

The TFI Smarter Travel Programme passed 300 participating organisations in December 2025.

The NTA presented the 150th Smarter Travel Mark in May 2026. The 2026 Smarter Travel Student Awards received more than 290 entries from over 580 students across 17 campuses.
