New Bus Stops to Improve Access Across Cork
Getting the bus in Cork will now be easier for tens of thousands more people with the planned rollout later this week of 67 new bus stops by the National Transport Authority (NTA). The new stops, which are expected to officially go live on Sunday 1st November, have been put in place on existing bus routes across the city and county and will make travelling by bus a more realistic choice for many. Passengers travelling on 21 different services in Cork City and Cork County will benefit.
Preparing for the Future Bus Network
The locations were chosen in conjunction with Cork City Council and Cork County Council and will also serve the new bus network that will be implemented as part of the BusConnects Cork programme. In addition to the 67 new stops planned to be operational as of Sunday 1st November, 11 other stops have been repositioned to more suitable locations.
Addressing Long Standing Bus Stop Challenges
By bringing the new bus stops into service now, the NTA is able to help remove a number of historic issues including:
There are a number of services in Cork with large gaps between stops. For example, on route 209 there was, until now, an inbound gap of approximately 2km between the bus stop at Lotamore and the next nearest stop at Murmount Road.
In the city centre, several locations will now have a ‘split stop’ arrangement. This reduces footpath crowding and makes it clearer where your bus will stop.
Continuing Improvements to Cork Bus Services, Accessibility and Location
At several locations, the new stops are better located and more accessible.
The rollout of these new bus stops is the latest in a series of improvements to bus services in the city in recent months. Earlier this year, on board ticket validators were added to Bus Éireann’s Cork City services, speeding up the boarding process. As part of this, the NTA introduced the ‘TFI 90 Minute Fare’ on Bus Éireann’s Cork City services, allowing passengers to transfer between services within 90 minutes for a single fare.
Better Access Means Better Public Transport
Commenting on the launch of the new stops, Anne Shaw, Chief Executive of the NTA, said:
“Making public transport easy to access is one of the most important factors in encouraging people to use it. The introduction of these new stops will make travelling by bus a more attractive option for many more people in Cork. When choosing whether or not to take the bus, one of the first things we all consider is where our nearest stop is located. We estimate that more than twenty five thousand people reside within a five minute walk of one of these new stops.
Better access benefits everyone, but can make an especially significant difference for older people, people with disabilities, families and those without access to a car. By bringing services closer to where people live and work, we’re making bus travel a more realistic and attractive option.
The delivery of these stops is just one piece of our much larger plan to improve bus services in the Cork Metropolitan Area through the BusConnects Cork programme, and reflects our commitment to creating a more connected, accessible and sustainable public transport network for Cork.”
Part of the Wider BusConnects Cork Vision
The new stops form part of the wider BusConnects Cork programme, which aims to deliver a more connected, accessible and sustainable public transport network for people living, working and travelling throughout the Cork Metropolitan Area.
