Fixed Charge Offences

Paying a fixed-payment penalty

You will need to have your:

  • Licence/badge number
  • The fixed payement notice issued by the Compliance Officer
  • Credit/debit card or authorisation from a person whose card you are using.

Method of Payment

All fixed payment penalties shall be paid to the National Transport Authority, PO Box 436, City North Business Park, Tuam Road, Galway, and shall be so paid (otherwise than in cash) by cheque, money order or postal order or by such other means as the National Transport Authority for the time being considers appropriate.

Timing of Payment

The fixed payment notice specifies the amount of the penalty which you must pay in order to avoid prosecution.

  • Within 28 days of the date of the notice, you can pay the amount specified in the notice,

or

  • Within 56 days of the date of the notice, you can pay the amount specified in the notice plus an additional 50 per cent.

If you do not pay within 56 days of the date of the notice, court proceedings are initiated.

 

Fixed-payment offences – SPSV operators

  • Removal or attempted removal of a tamper-proof licence disc without the prior consent of the National Transport Authority (€80)
  • Failure to display tamper-proof licence discs (€80)
  • Failure to display required driver identification (€60)
  • Displaying forged driver identification on an SPSV (€250)
  • Failure to notify details of SPSV being operated (€40)

Fixed-payment offences – vehicle equipment

  • Failure to comply with taxi roof sign requirements (€40)
  • Failure to display the required in-vehicle information (€40)
  • Displaying a sign or advertisement other than one prescribed by the National Transport Authority (hackney and limousine only) (€40)
  • Failure to safely carry prescribed safety articles (€60)
  • Failure to have a boarding aid in or as part of a wheelchair accessible taxi or wheelchair accessible hackney (€60)
  • Failure to have a wheelchair restraint system and wheelchair occupant restraint system in a wheelchair accessible taxi or wheelchair accessible hackney (€60)
  • Failure to have prescribed signage affixed to the front doors of a taxi or a wheelchair accessible taxi (€250)

Fixed-payment offences – taximeter (taxi only)

  • Failure to have the meter properly calibrated in line with the current National Maximum Taxi Fare (€250)
  • Failure to comply with requirements in relation to the fitting and operation of the meter (€60)
  • Operating the meter while the taxi is standing for hire or plying for hire (€60)
  • Failure to operate the meter while the taxi is on hire without a waiver signed in advance by the customer (€60)

Fixed-payment offences – standing or plying for hire

  • Standing at an appointed stand while the vehicle is not available for hire (taxi only) (€40)
  • Standing for hire other than at an appointed stand (taxi only) (€40)
  • Standing with a taxi on part of a public road adjoining or in proximity to an appointed stand when the stand is full (€40)
  • Standing or plying for hire without a licence to stand or ply for hire in that county (€40)

Fixed-payment offences – fares and charges

  • Unreasonable refusal to carry a passenger for a journey of 30 km or less (taxi only) (€80)
  • Refusal to carry a guide dog or other assistance dog  (€40)
  • Charging a booking fee where engaged while plying for hire or standing for hire or without having been pre-booked by a customer (taxi only) (€60)
  • Failure to print and offer a receipt in the prescribed form to a passenger upon completion of a journey (€40)
  • Failure to make available a receipt in the prescribed form to a passenger upon completion of a journey (hackney and limousine only) (€40)
  • Failure in a hackney or limousine to carry the required booking record in respect of a hire  (€60)
