The NTA has prepared a suite of Typical Construction Details (TCDs) for use on NTA funded capital infrastructure projects. The TCDs have been prepared to assist designers, contractors and road authorities in the design, specification and construction of capital projects. It remains the responsibility of designers, contractors and road authorities to choose appropriate construction details (including TII standard construction details or bespoke details as appropriate) for any given project based on site specific circumstances, and to ensure the overall safety, durability and efficiency of all works.
Aims of the Typical Construction Details
The TCDs aim to promote more uniform approaches to the design and construction of some common built elements including footways, kerbs, cycle facilities and drainage systems, and their use may bring a number of benefits for projects including:
- helping to ensure compliance with relevant standards and guidance;
- enhanced consistency and quality of project delivery;
- improving efficiency by reducing design and construction costs and speeding up design reviews and approvals; and
- reducing the risk of errors arising from inappropriate approaches.
A live set of documents
It is intended that the TCDs will be a live set of documents, that will be updated periodically as required. New TCDs will also be produced and published on the NTA website over time. Therefore, professionals should always consult the NTA website for the latest version of the TCDs prior to incorporation into scheme designs.
Note that the TCDs are not a substitute for professional judgment and they do not negate the need for compliance with legal obligations, contractual requirements, or site-specific risk assessments and the NTA does not assume any liability to any party though issuance of these guidance documents.
