Launch of Light Up Your Bike campaign

As evenings grow darker and winter approaches, the National Transport Authority (NTA) and the TFI Smarter Travel Programme have launched this year’s Light Up Your Bike campaign, taking place during the final week of October. The annual initiative aims to remind cyclists of the crucial importance of staying visible on the roads during the darker months.

Be seen, use both front and rear lights

With shorter daylight hours and reduced visibility, cyclists face a greater risk on their daily journeys. The campaign encourages all riders to use both front and rear lights, ensuring they can be seen by other road users and remain safe throughout the season.

The annual Light Up Your Bike promotion takes place every October.  Partners of the Smarter Travel Programme are invited to register for free bike lights prior to the October Bank Holiday when the clocks go back.

This year’s campaign has seen a significant increase on last year’s figures, with 93 organisations registering so far and a total of 25,000 lights being distributed.

Being visible is of vital importance, stay safe this autumn and winter

Hugh Creegan, Interim CEO of NTA said: “As the last of the summer daylight fades and a commute by bike becomes a journey into the dark, being visible is of vital importance and we encourage all cyclists to check their lights, ensure their bike can be seen, and stay safe this autumn and winter.”
